Arno's Court Country Club

Arno's Court Country Club

Arnos Manor Hotel was built in the 18th Century. This historic building boasts many original features recalling its days as the luxurious home of wealthy Bristol merchant William Reeve. Arnos Manor Hotel was built in the 18th Century.

The Black Castle at Arnos Court shows the use of black building blocks seen in and around Bristol. They were made with waste produced from the brass industry, called slag. William Reeve, who built Arnos Court and the Black Castle, owned a brass works. Casting the slag into building blocks solved the problem of disposing of the large amounts of waste produced by the industry, and made more profit for the brassworks.

IT was on December 1, 1960, that the former RC Convent and Girls Reformatory School reopened as Arno's Court County Club.

One of the proprietors Eric Hogg, who lived in Talbot Road, was the son of the landlord of the Langton Court Hotel and a former landlord of The Red Lion pub at Knowle.

His partner, Eric Hoyle of Bristol Bakeries, lived with his wife Connie at the Court during the seven-year period that the duo ran the business.

Officially opened by comedian Derek Roy, the club was hailed as a "welcome addition to Bristol's nightlife" by fun-loving councillor George Maggs, also the Sheriff of Bristol.

It soon became the place to go, especially for Bristol businessmen such as wealthy Harry Dolman, the then chairman of Bristol City FC.

A swimming pool was built about a year later, and in January 1965 a luxurious casino was opened, the first night of which was graced by a "glamorous nightclub entertainer" called Mandy Rice-Davies.

Miss Rice-Davies, was of course, famed for her amorous involvement in the 1963 Profumo Affair.

As this touch of Monte Carlo arrived in the city, so 350 invited guests managed to quaff 200 bottles of champagne.

There was a near riot the same year when the glamorous Swindon actress Diana Dors, who was booked to appear in cabaret, failed to turn up.

Many artists appearing at the TWW television studios next door (it's now ITV West) would pop into to the club, as did stars performing at the Theatre Royal and the Hippodrome, such as comedians Eric Morecombe and Ernie Wise.

Journalist and broadcaster Nancy Spain was a frequent visitor.

Staying open until 2am, the club traded on its upmarket image with many professional people, such doctors and the like, taking up membership.

The cost of this in 1963 was five guineas (?5.25) for a couple and three guineas for a single person.

The foyer, which boasted an ornamental pond, was beautifully decorated with white paintwork, a scarlet red carpeted double staircase and crystal chandeliers.

The club, which covered the whole first floor, had a dining room and dance floor.

The ballroom boasted a resident trio – double bass, trumpet and drums. There was bingo available and a games room complete with fruit machines and table tennis, where Welsh singer Tom Jones once played.

The mansion even had its own resident phantom with several guests reporting sightings of a ghost – "Sister Theresa" – a nun dressed in grey who would glide silently up an unfinished staircase and along a corridor.

Amongst the stars appearing at the weekly cabaret night – a very popular event – were Gerry Dorsey (later reinvented as Engelburt Humperdinck), jolly pianist Mrs Mills, singer Matt Munro, comedians Tommy Cooper, Janet Brown and Max Wall, outrageous US singer PJ Proby, every boys' top guitarist Bert Weedon, comedian Stan Stennett and singers Ronnie Hilton and Tom Jones. Ballad singer David Whitfield, noted for his bad language and risque stories, was subsequently banned from appearing at the club.

Other stars included top pop singers Susan (Bobby's Girl) Maughan and Adam (What do You Want) Faith.

Donald Peers, billed as "The Cavalier of Song," got the audience to join in with his party piece, By a Babbling Brook.

The resident photographer, Casey, who had a darkroom on the premises, would take pictures of the stars and then display them for sale outside the club.

But when all-round entertainer Max Bygraves arrived he told Casey in advance that he didn't want any photos taken of himself.

Among the many artists who didn't complain about this intrusion were singers Tessie O'Shea and The Springfields.

Dusty Springfield, you might recall, went on to have a highly successful solo career.

Other stars booked to entertain were singers Helen Shapiro and Dennis Lotis, comedian Tommy Trinder, Jon Pertwee, Joe "Mr Piano" Henderson and local clarinetist Acker Bilk.

Pat Sweet and her husband Michael, who were club members for some years, were there on the opening night in 1960.

Pat recalls a "Spanish Night" for the opening of the swimming pool when she and a group of girlfriends got drenched by a broken water pipe in the ladies' toilets.

Often referred to locally as "Lady Hoyle", Eric's glamorous wife was well known for her bouffant hairdo and Americ

I always have a soft spot for the odd looking things. This bear is one of many of the gifts from the baby shower held for me this afternoon.

My daughter has a TON of clothes. The major essentials are still left to be purchased--mattress, monitor, sheets, etc. I really appreciated all of the gifts. We got A LOT of clothes. My baby never has to worry about wearing the same thing twice, I guess.

Seeing my friends was so nice. I really needed that after a horrible week. I was also really glad to see all of the people that I don't see even as often as my friends. It is such a surprise to have these things held for you. Until times like this, I really take for granted all of the people that actually do care about me. Almost everyone from my mom's office came out. Everyone was just so excited. I got so many hugs. :) I realllllly needed that. I am really blessed to have such wonderful people in my life and supporting my growing family. I also learned that my mom's boss (the doctor's wife) still has the picture from right after I was born sitting on her desk! haha.

Though I had a good time, I am exhausted. My feet are all swollen (they're getting that way regularly now) and my back is sore and I don't really have any room to cough or sneeze. Compared to the past few months, I'm feeling great though. Though I do hurt, I don't have nearly as much pain as I have been having. I am constantly hungry these days and ALWAYS stubbing my toes on things (seriously, my toenails are shards and the tips of my toes are so sensitive now).

I think my favorite part was figuring out my father-in-law's little touches into their gift. Luke and I both really love bunnies. When he was growing up, Luke had a little stuffed bunny named Bunny and his ears were backwards and Luke absolutely loved him. I started dating Luke when he was 16 and that bunny still had a special place sitting on a chair in Luke's room. Luke treated him with so much care and love when moving him around. I am really surprised that bunny didn't move with us. I also really like bunnies, but I don't have a great reason; I just like them. I think they're gentle and sweet and perfect. I would have a really hard time being afraid of rabbits. Both my mom and Luke's mom decorated our rooms in clowns when we were born and we both became terrified of clowns. I didn't want to do things that Amelia would be afraid of, so it is mostly just lavender stuff and some bunnies here and there. Anyway. We like bunnies. Luke's dad also LOVES rabbits. They're his favorite because of the book Watership Down by Richard [name corrected. I put Douglas at first! Haha. Thanks, Barrie!] Adams (which I ashamedly still haven't read). That is his favorite book of all time. Their gift for the shower contained a bunny with lavender inside of the ears and a rattle inside. It is the softest thing I've ever felt and so adorable. :) The second thing that I KNOW was his idea (Angel told me all about it) was a bib that said "I Love Grandpa." Angel (my mother-in-law) said she had gone to the bathroom before they went to checkout and she came back and was putting their items up to checkout and was surprised by the bib because he'd gone back to get that all by himself. I thought that was the cutest thing.

Something I've really been thinking about is Grandparents for Amelia. I really have never seen my dad so excited about anything in my life. He just loves having little girls around. The rest of the grandparents-to-be are really excited too. I really cannot imagine a better group of people to be grandparents. They're all so different and so special in their own ways. I really love them all so much and am so happy that I can help to give them something they're going to love forever. I just don't know how to explain how I feel about all four of them becoming grandparents. I could NOT ever in a million years imagine two people that I would rather have as my in-laws; they are just amazing.

I think all of the baby stuff is making me very sentimental today.

Odd fact about child Leslie that was brought up at the shower: Instead of a new toy like a doll or something that made noise or a game or whatever, I loved cat toys--little fuzzy mice with tails. I LOVED them. Once, my "sister" was in my brother's room and she was folding clothes or something and I managed to stick a toy mouse on her shoulder without her realizing. I creeped out of the room and then walked in really casually and said "Misty! What is that?!" She looked over and shrieked and jumped up and threw it. :)

I am so tired that I might just be able to sleep like a normal person!
Update on the dog situation from yesterday:
I went that route again today and really looked hard the whole time for anything that might have once been a dog. I didn't see any sign of him anywhere. The only thing even close to the area where I hit him was really, really, really flat and I don't think that little dog could have gotten t

Halloween Cubicle

Halloween Cubicle

There was a big push on our floor to dress up in costumes and decorate our cubes today for Halloween. I draw the line at wearing a costume to work, but when I found out half the marketing department was doing a group theme of "Candyland," I had to take action. My spider setup was the logical antidote. Especially considering I'm in the WEB department. Heh.

Old Damascus Syria

Old Damascus Syria

Early travelers crossing the desert to Syria got their first view of Damascus from the top of Jebel Qassioun, a gently sloped mountain northwest of town. It was not a sight they soon forgot.

The prophet Muhammad refused to descend into the city, declaring that one could enter paradise only once and he would save himself for the one above. A thousand or so years later, Mark Twain loved the view but found the city, on closer inspection, "crooked and cramped and dirty." Muhammad, he decided, "was wise without knowing it."

Though my arrival in Syria was by Airbus rather than by desert caravan, I knew my first stop had to be Qassioun mountain. I dropped my bags at the hotel, quickly arranged for a car and, by the time dusk began to gather, was sitting at an outdoor cafe perched high above Damascus.

My driver, a 25-year-old named Mohammed Madal, grew wistful. "Every time we return to our country," he said, "we have to come to Qassioun to feel like a Syrian again."

A warm, dry breeze brushed our faces and the lights of Damascus winked to life, the glowing emerald rings of its minarets coming into view. In the distance were the oval-shaped ramparts of Old Damascus, the Old City, where I would spend the next day trying to discover who was right, the prophet or the wit.

For longer than I can remember, I had wanted to visit Damascus. As a young boy, I was enchanted by the biblical stories of Paul's road-to-Damascus conversion. Later, as a correspondent in Africa, I was captivated by friends' tales of a Middle East city that brimmed with history and yet, owing to its political isolation, was rarely visited by Western tourists.

My opportunity came on a stopover I engineered on the way home from a business trip to South Asia. My schedule permitted just one full day of exploration, so I had to make the most of it.

Early the next morning, on a sunny fall day last year, I set out on foot from my hotel for the Souk al-Hamadiye, the largest and best known of the Old City souks, or Arab markets, and the main pedestrian entrance.

As I turned into the souk, I was immediately struck by its size. The wide cobblestone street, which dated from Roman times, was lined with the narrow facades of two-story shops. An arched dome of corrugated iron rose high above the avenue, and pinpoints of sunlight beamed through bullet holes dating to the 1920s, when French warplanes put down an uprising of Arab nationalists.

The crowds were thinned by the Ramadan holiday, the annual month of sunup-to-sundown fasting for Muslims, but shops were open. It was clear that this was a working street in a working city, a place where Syrians shopped for clothing, rugs and furniture.

I strolled through the Hamadiye souk for nearly half a mile and emerged into a sunny courtyard dominated by the 30-foot-tall remnant of a Roman archway. Men lined up at an outdoor scale to weigh themselves, and shops sold worry beads and Bedouin jewelry.

Rising from the far end of the courtyard was the western wall of the great Umayyad Mosque, one of the holiest sites in Islam. I walked around to the tourist office, paid 50 Syrian pounds (about $1) to a man behind a metal desk and was issued a ticket for the day.

The site of the mosque has been a place of worship since the 9th century BC, when the Aramaeans built a temple to their god. It was later a temple to the Roman god Jupiter and, when Emperor Constantine became a Christian, it was replaced by a basilica dedicated to John the Baptist.

The Christians were nudged out in the 8th century, when Damascus became the capital of the early Islamic world, and the current structure was built. The mosque complex, including a courtyard and prayer hall, is vast -- 200 yards long by 100 yards wide -- and enclosed by enormous walls that still hold some of the Roman temple's original stonework. The three corner minarets and the Dome of the Eagle, which stands on four pillars inside the south wall, are visible for miles.

I lined up with the faithful, doffed my shoes and entered the red-carpeted hall, which echoed with the muezzin's call to prayer. Velvet ropes divided the cavernous hall lengthwise into three distinct sections. Along the south wall, facing Mecca, hundreds of men prayed. On the north side, robed women chatted and tended to children.

In the broad middle, visitors took photographs, strollers gazed at mosaics on the walls, men read the Koran and people napped on the carpet. The smell of socks was, at times, strong.

Near the center of the hall was a prominent, if incongruous, reminder of the pre-Islamic history of this house of worship -- an ornately decorated green-glass monument, about the size of a large car, said to be the tomb of John the Baptist.

From the mosque, I set off to explore the crooked, narrow streets.

The Old City is an antique gemstone surrounded by a traffic-clogged metropolis of 4 million. Modern-day Damascus spreads across

Our Host

Our Host

I met her in Dobrica village when I was visiting those almost abandoned villages of Vojvodina. She was sitting on a typical bench that was in front of her house. I stopped and talked with her for a while. She lives alone and I was happy to be there to make her company even for just half an hour.

She showed me her house which was beautiful - interior was all decorated with old furniture impossible to find nowadays. The weird thing is that she doesn't live in that house but in the small house beside that one. Like she is keeping those nice things for time to eat them...

I have to admit that it was hard to capture this image. Very high walls and position of the clock and that nice texture above shouldn't be cropped... Not to mention woman's shadow that especially creates the atmosphere...

Christmas decoration for my mother (shhh - don't tell her! It's going to be a surprise...)

Christmas decoration for my mother (shhh - don't tell her! It's going to be a surprise...)

I'll be at my parents place with the kids on Christmas Eve. In Germany that's the most important part of Christmas, where nice dinner is eaten and presents are opened.
My mother asked me to decorate her Christmas tree, and since she has her ornaments in silver and offwhite, I thought I decorate the rest of the room in her colours as well - but she doesn't know yet.
So tonight I "practised" how to do it, or let's say, I prepared everything. I really enjoyed doing it, and this is the outcome, hope she'll like it! (Though I have no idea yet, how to transport all this without anything breaking)

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Spatholts Hardware

Spatholts Hardware

This long vacant hardware store in Leetonia advertises brands that have been extinct for probably 50 years. Lucas Paints appears to have been swallowed up by Sherwin-Williams, but don't quote me on that. It was harder to dig up info on "American Hardware". That and it's late and this is it before I go to bed.

Faram Bros Hardware in Port Melbourne is closing down. The end of an era. Hopefully it doesn't get replaced with a neo-georgian nightmare.
